2008 ADRA Appeal

What are you doing to change your world? What do you give your time, talents and treasure to that makes a global impact? Too often we can be tempted to think the problems we see around our world are too big and our little effort does not make a difference. When children are dying every two seconds simply for the need of food we need to stop and think about what we are doing for ‘the least of these’. The spare change you throw on the side-table really can save lives.

One of the ways you can make a global impact is getting involved in ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency). We are blessed to be part of a church that takes global issues seriously and through ADRA we can do together what it would be impossible to do alone.

At the moment we are gearing up for the 2008 ADRA Appeal (starting August 9). The money collected really does make an impact in changing lives here and overseas. We need you to dream, create and implement ways of making the ADRA Appeal effective. Every dollar really does help and goes a long way to helping communities in need.

While we have found that door knocking is still the most effective way for raising money for ADRA, there are lots of creative ways you can get involved beyond doorknocking. What stops you as a church, youth group, small group, Sabbath School class or family coming up with a plan for how you will raise money? Start planning now for what you will be involved in during ADRA Appeal month. Some churches do fun-runs, others do car washes, auctions, concerts and even golf days to raise money for the ADRA Appeal. Maybe it is doing something as a family like selling some goods you really don’t use or choosing to go without some treat and then using that money for ADRA. How might you raise money for ADRA in your workplace or school? We have great collection cans for you to use in your workplace.

Come up with a plan and go for it. If you need help then feel free to contact the ADRA Appeal co-ordinators at the conference office and we’ll help with what endorsement and promotion you might need. One of the reasons you are on this planet is to serve and reach out to a world in need. ADRA provides a great way for us to join together and make a difference.

iGENERATION

iGENERATION, an ADRA Appeal initiative for youth launched in Greater Sydney in 2007, is being repeated this year.

As iGENERATION’s bi-line, nvolve mpact nspire suggests, the campaign aims to involve youth in ADRA activities so that they can make a positive impact and go on to inspire others to do the same. The iGENERATION campaign has inspired other Australian Union Conferences to join the iGENERATION movement to encourage youth to get involved in ADRA’s fight against poverty.

Did you know that about 10 million children die every year before they reach five years of age?

Did you know that more than a billion children lack adequate nutrition, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health care, shelter and education?

Did you know that 1,500 children aged under fifteen years become infected with HIV every day?

Did you know that today, nearly 250 million children will go to work? Their work will have no regard for their safety, education, health or well-being.

Youth are encouraged to raise a minimum of $50 for the ADRA Appeal. Participants who achieve this goal will be entitled to a free iGENERATION T-SHIRT (with a new design & colour) and, on presentation of a church treasurer’s ADRA Appeal receipt, free admission to the iGENERATION CONCERT on Saturday night, 30 August, 2008 at Sydney Adventist College. Without an ADRA Appeal receipt from a local church treasurer, admission to the CONCERT will be $25 and t-shirts will be available for sale for $25.

Our teens have a real heart for global issues and take seriously their ability to impact the world. It’s great to see young people coming up with innovative ideas to raise money for ADRA. Sponsored bike rides, auctioning themselves off to serve for a day, busking and car washes are all great ways to have fun and at the same time raise money that makes an impact

Although no-one can up-stage youth when it comes to fundraising, ADRA has a great Activity & Fundraising Kit for youth. It is called "Dare to Make a Difference." Check it out at www.adra.org.au/getinvolved/

In 2007 the iGENERATION CONCERT featured Christian artists and Adventist choirs. In total, $23,000 was raised for ADRA by 500 lucky people who got to see AND hear last year’s CONCERT.

There may have been lots of exciting special effects, prizes and surprises in the iGENERATION CONCERT 2007 but this year the iGENERATION CONCERT will be even bigger AND better than it was last year - greater involvement, more impact and inspirational results. Don’t mizit!
